The village of Heptonstall is about 1 miles from Colden. The writers Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath spent their early married life near the village. Sylvia Plath is buried in Heptonstall churchyard. The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank, is between Colden and Heptonstall, and the house which once belonged to him. Heptonstall is an impressive medieval village, with weavers cottages an other ancient buildings, including the dramatic ruined church. Heptonstall has two pubs, The White Lion and The Cross Inn , a cafe (Towngate Tearoom)and a post office, all close together towards the bottom of the road through the vilage, Smithwell Lane.
